Yohji Yamamoto

Launched in 1981, Yohji Yamamoto’s namesake label is a higher-priced offshoot of his original Y’s line. Never conventionally sexy or trendy, Yamamoto appeals to clients who appreciate wit, romance, and fashion history. His menswear, launched in 1984, evinces the same gallery-friendly grandeur as his womenswear, apparent in the dark, textured jackets and voluminous trousers. The designer was given a nod from Japan’s Ministry of Economy in 2005 for executing a model brand. Flagships have become an international enterprise, with outposts in Tokyo, Paris, London, and New York.

Yves Saint Laurent

Yves Saint Laurent frequently uses ethnic themes in his garments, as well as bright colors contrasted with black. His day clothes have a slightly masculine flavor, and his luxurious evening wear is tinged with fantasy. He is famous for "Le Smoking" tuxedo jacket, see-through blouses (1968), peasant blouses, bolero jackets, pantsuits, and smocks. Although a shy person, Saint Laurent believes he is the last true couturier. He maintains the highest standards of classic cut and tailoring, and he receives a standing ovation after every collection is presented.

Zac Posen

Zac Posen launched his namesake label at the tender age of 21. Posen’s work has gained respect for its increasingly streamlined aesthetic of forties-inflected tailoring, mermaid-esque gowns, and itty-bitty cocktail frocks. He enlisted his mother Susan as CEO (she has since stepped down, and serves as Chairman) and his sister Alexandra as creative director, and in 2004, Sean Combs became a much-publicized backer. That same year, the CFDA gave Posen Swarovski’s Perry Ellis Award for Womenswear.
