Elie Saab's ready-to-wear line, which launched in 1998 in Milan, heralds the same feminine aesthetic as his couture dresses, with brightly colored silks, chiffons, pearl beading, and embroidered lace. With their Middle Eastern detailing and European sensibility, Saab gowns are also at home on the Hollywood red carpet; Halle Berry famously wore one to pick up her Academy Award in 2002.

In just three years, Elie Tahari, an Israeli immigrant who moved to New York in 1971, worked his way up from electrician in the Garment District to head of his own womenswear line. In 1974, he was one of the first to open a boutique on Madison Avenue. But times have changed the company: The New York flagship is now located in Soho, and the Studio 54–inspired garb has become tailored, modern, and upscale office-friendly. The line has also expanded into menswear and accessories.
