Color Trends
Tips
To Finding The Right Color.
When it comes to color, the more you dare, the more fun you have. You don’t need to go all out and risk looking like a walking Popsicle.
On the catwalk, it’s easy to wear a bright red coat or an entire outfit made up of orange colors. Catwalk designers dare to move ahead of the pack and are early to break new color trends. They can afford to be a little more outrageous. But in the real world we only dare to wear such things even on our bravest days. |

On days when you aren’t feeling so brave, remember that a little detail goes a long way. Accessories and tops in interesting contrasting colors are a perfect way of livening up a relaxed everyday look. Whether you decide to wear a whole outfit that shines like a neon sign or a pair of shoes that stick out like a sore thumb, never forget Coco Chanel’s wise words: “The best color in the whole wide world is the one that looks good on you.”
Below is an inside look as to what makes certain colors so popular for one season and others so last season.
Some designers are so powerful that they can start a trend and popularize a particular color all by themselves. For instance, in 1947, Italian designer Elsa Schiaparelli sent a shockwave through Paris when she introduced hot pink.
In 2002, designer Oscar de la Renta unveiled a collection of cerulean gowns. And soon after Yves Saint Laurent showcased cerulean military jackets. Before you knew it cerulean showed up in the collections of eight different designers. And then it filtered down into the casual sections of department stores.
Fashion designers draw inspiration from specific sources. It isn’t just a matter of chance. Influences can come from anywhere. It may be anything from the trade fairs, exhibitions, travel, magazines, trend books and lectures on trends. Sometimes street fashion pushes the color trends to. For example, when Rave took over the London clubs several years ago, 80’s neon colors were suddenly in style again.
Many designers also work with color consultancy Pantone. Pantone has developed a color system, a kind of language that designers can use to communicate with the producers of their clothing. Every single color in Pantone’s system has a precise, evocative name like Rose Dust or Vibrant Green.

Color Trends Spring 2010
 |
Designers bring splashes of sunshine to the runway for spring 2010. Vibrant brights add a sense of excitement to the color palette, while practical neutrals provide a safety net for cautious consumers. “Now more than ever, women are vigilant when it comes to spending. Instead of re-inventing their wardrobe at the start of each season, consumers want pieces to complement what they already own. Pairing a bold color with a basic piece or freshening up their look with bright accents addresses the need for practicality, as well as fun.” |
Color Trends Fall 2009
 |
Subtle contrasts, like those found in a painter’s masterpiece, make up the diverse color palette for fall 2009. Designers play with a broad spectrum of unique color combinations this season, resulting in distinct, yet cohesive color palettes. “The fall 2009 palette is more unique and thoughtful than the typical autumnal hues of years past. Designers recognize the desire for fundamental basics that speak to current economic conditions, but also understand the need to incorporate vibrant color to grab the consumers’ eyes and entice them to buy.” |
Color Trends Spring 2009
 |
Spring traditionally evokes a sense of freshness and new beginnings, with sprouting shoots and blossoming flowers that inspire designers to breakout of the winter doldrums. Bright colors return to the top 10 list for spring ’09, as designers incorporate vibrant pops into their collections, yet temper the vibrancy with deeper, translucent or neutral tones. “New York’s fashion designers encourage hopeful attitudes with lively colors, while sophisticated, grounded hues address the need for stability in times of economic uncertainty.” |
Color Trends Fall 2008
 |
Best described as a season of change, fall ’08 is defined by rich, elegant hues that offer a vibrant selection. New York's fashion designers emphasize cooler blues, greens and purples in the top five tones used in their collections, followed by variations of warm red, orange and yellow. "Fall is traditionally a time for subdued, quiet colors, but this season we are seeing a shift toward cool hues with bright, exciting undertones." |

Refreshing splashes of invigorating brights punctuate classic, versatile neutrals as designers offer a playful spring palette for endless exploration and creative combinations. Variations on popular colors such as energizing red, cool, waterborne blue and eco-friendly greens also play a key role this season. “The spring ‘08 color palette perfectly reflects the cheerfulness of the season. Stabilizing neutrals combined with pops of brighter colors to create unique, distinctive looks are the basis for a great spring and summer wardrobe.” |
Color Trends Fall 2007
 |
Complex and exotic describe the intriguingly unusual and inviting color palette for fall ’07. The traditional neutral shades expected for autumn have been replaced this season with rich, nuanced hues, offering more opportunity for creativity with interesting and unexpected color combinations. Many seasons have paid homage to nature, and fall ‘07 is no exception. Shale Green takes the shade in a murky, blue/gray direction, while foliage-inspired Green Moss goes to the yellow side. Earthy Burnt Ochre is this autumn’s orange and sophisticated Stargazer continues the trend of turquoise, but with a deeper intensity. |
Color Trends Fall 2006
 |
Just as day turns to twilight, Fall 2006 colors are a subtle deepening of the world around, lit with the final glow of the turning horizon. New York designers have found themselves in a sanctuary of color, filled with the constancy of nightfall. Fall 2006 is a time to transition back to more dependable colors. We're looking for colors we can wrap ourselves in - A feeling achieved through classic neutrals as a base, accented with rich hues. Half of the palette, remarkably, is expressed in basic chestnuts - all very familiar, very approachable tones. |
Color Trends Spring 2006
 |
New York designers are awash in America’s favorite color for Spring 2006. From sea to shining sea – the Mediterranean and Caribbean to the South Pacific and Atlantic – they have collected shades ranging from aquatic Blue Tint to placid Skyway and seaworthy Deep Ultramarine. Smooth sailing typifies the calm and effortless attitude infusing the season. Breezy, carefree hues like Lily Green, fresh Viola, juicy Melon and French Vanilla – perhaps borrowed from a Matisse – take the edge off, while Pink re–enters the palette as Cameo Pink after a brief respite. |
Color Trends Spring 2005
 |
New York Fashion Week Spring 2005, September 8–15, 2004. They are the New Bohemians: Jet-set artists in search of inspiration – and pleasure. Passionate, hedonistic. Racing across the ocean to capture a lifestyle that is at once foreign and familiar, casual and luxurious. On the Mediterranean, they surf Blue Turquoise waters reflecting the infinite, cloudless sky. Diving from stony cliffs of Slate Gray and Kelp into the Delft depths, they rise to the surface with Coral Reef treasures. |
When we asked the designers to translate their spring fashion colors to interior paint colors and describe the room, this is what they said:
